Infrared Sciences Corp. (ISC) is a New York based technology company
focused on early detection of breast cancer. Using
state-of-the-art infrared and computer technology, ISC has created a
fully automated, non-invasive system known as Sentinel
BreastScan.
Sentinel BreastScan provides breast health information unlike any
other non-invasive test. Sentinel BreastScan is a non-invasive
procedure that does not require painful compressions or touching of any
kind. The system provides real-time information to the
doctor on the patient’s breast health.
Sentinel BreastScan is sensitive to the physiological abnormalities
that take place in very early-stage breast cancer. Unlike
mammography, ultrasound, or MRI, which detect anatomical features such
as a mass (once the mass becomes large enough to be detected) Sentinel
BreastScan responds to unique parameters in the breast that are
associated with the process of angiogenesis. Studies have shown
that angiogenesis, (abnormal cells begin the formation of their own
blood supply), can start 10-12 years before a cancerous lesion is large
enough to be detected by conventional means.
Sentinel BreastScan is useful for all women, and particularly useful
for women with dense breasts (estimated to be 30-40% of women), who
cannot get a reliable mammogram. It has demonstrated it's ability
to detect tumors as small as 3mm. Sentinel BreastScan does not
respond to benign conditions, such as a cyst or fibro adenoma.
This feature will assist the doctor in making a determination on
the diagnosis options for a suspicious lesion.
Women in the 18-40 year old range (who are not currently getting
mammograms) are now able to get a baseline breast health profile, with
the Sentinel BreastScan. Our tests have shown that the test is stable
from year to year, allowing a young woman to be monitored for any
changes as they grow older. Since young women do not regularly
monitor their breast health (except for BSE or CBE, breast self-exam or
clinical breast exam, respectively), many only find cancer when it is
in advanced stages. Sentinel BreastScan will provide their doctor
with more breast health information than can be provided by a clinical
exam alone.
